“The Future Directions and Breakthroughs of Hong Kong’s Environmental Industry” 《香港環保產業 – 突破發展 引領未來》
17 April 2015, Hong Kong
Internationally, in recent years, the drive for environmental quality, energy sustainability and efficiency, green economy, low carbon society and circular economy has spurred significant growth of environmental industry around the world. Such environmental industry momentum and the world environmental industry market will remain strong in the coming years and will present challenges and opportunities for Hong Kong.
In China, 12th Five Year Plan has placed great emphasis on the development of environmental industry covering environmental control technologies, environmental infrastructure projects, energy technologies, and products and services for circular economy. A major new environmental law in China was promulgated in May this year. The coming 13th five year plan is now being formulated and environmental industry is likely to remain a major policy driver of the national development. The future development of environmental industry in China will create enormous opportunities for Hong Kong.
In Hong Kong, the Government is promoting the development of green economy and is spearheading various major environmental programmes and infrastructure investments. For instance, the Innovation Technology Fund and the new Recycling Fund would continue to support the future development of environmental industry and various environmental infrastructure projects are at different stages of planning and implementation. Also in Asia and Europe, the principle of circular economy is being vigorously pursued. For instance, Netherlands Government has promulgated their action plan on circular economy to further promote the development of environmental industry and Fung Global Institute has recently released its report on “Towards a Circular Economy in Asia”.
In the light of the above trends and developments and in order to position Hong Kong to seize opportunities available, it is opportune for our Division to promote and facilitate the discussion on the future direction of environmental industry in Hong Kong by bringing together various stakeholders including professionals and experts, academics and research institutions, businesses and policy makers.
The Forum comprises the keynote session and four other sessions including (1) Regional perspectives and experiences on environmental industry; (2) Green business in Hong Kong; and (3) Circular economy as a cross-cutting policy driver for growth and development of environmental industry. (4) a closing panel discussion on future direction of environmental industry in Hong Kong.
